This is a relatively brand new dining option inside the gates of Punta Mita just to the left of the St. Regis Resort. For full menus as well as a map and the meaning of Sufi you should visit their website by clicking here. Describing itself as "an exquisite gourmet 'mexiterranean' restaurant, this restaurant is a must stop.
Considering the superb food, the excellent atmosphere and the attentive staff this restaurant is very fairly priced. Your bill here will be considerably less than Bahia at the Four Seasons for example. The tasting menu described below is 500 pesos without wine.
Don't expect a sunset dinner as it is situated on the Bahia side of Punta Mita looking across the bay towards Puerto Vallarta to the south. This ocean side locale is stunning with exceptional contemporary interior (or should I say exterior) design. You enter through a beautiful palapa dining area with a not to be missed seashell chandelier. On nice evenings you would enjoy your feast on the upper area sheltered by a suspended sail for lack of a better description.
I suspect arriving during the day for lunch would include a swim in the infinity edge pool situated right inside the restaurant, beckoning the idea of a true "beach club".
Children would likely be welcome during the day and for the earlier side of the dinner service but I wouldn't want to make others enjoying a romantic kid free escape inconvenienced by a few tired ones in the later seatings.
In each of our two visits we have enjoyed the Sufi Tasting Menu. Starting with an amuse bouche followed by beef carpaccio, then a classic tortilla soup, a choice of fish of the day bouillabaisse or red snapper with roasted pineapple (delicious) and a rosemary sorbet gives the taste buds a break. Before desert of freshly prepared creme brulee or souffle, there is a dish known as Sufi tampiquena which is a traditional Mexican assortment of chilaquiles (fried corn tortillas), panela cheese (white, mild, creamy and soft), thinly sliced poblano chili & black beans. This final dish is typically served with a meat - on our first visit a beef tenderloin and our second a tender skirt steak. None of the portions are overbearing and are all presented nice and neat.
On the beach a few trees are strung with very subtle twinkling blue lights, a fire pit is ready for cool nights or marshmallow roasting. I should also mention that the bathrooms are even worth a visit! Sufi should be a one of your top dining options when visiting Punta Mita.
